I think most people played one game of Candy Crush™ at one time or another. (Not the type I pictured above.) I find it a relaxing way to end my day. Not too long ago I thought about how approaching the game is like approaching your business. Stick with me on this one and let me explain.
Sometimes when I am playing the game I get so focused on the part of the board where I am that I miss big moves I should have made on another part. Because I am not paying attention to the big picture, the pieces are moving out of place and that big move is no longer available. Much like in business, we can get so focused on the tasks we have right in front of us that we miss other opportunities around us.
When I think more strategically, slowly, and with purpose, I am more successful in the game. If I start by looking over the entire board and planning out where a few moves will get me, I have a better idea that I will end up where I plan. The same is true in business. When I start looking at a bigger picture, think about where I want to wind up I can anticipate the moves it will take me with more accuracy.
If my goal is to get more people on my email list, then I need to strategize how to do that beyond just asking everyone who gives me a card if I can add them. (But that is a good start!) Other strategies I might concentrate on are:
- Offering a whitepaper. For instance one that I offer is 1o Social Media Strategies for Success.
- Having a form on my website several places.
- Presenting seminars/webinars and allowing all attendees to join my email list.
- Following up with people at networking events and letting each know about the benefits of my monthly emails.
Each of the strategies above is a specific way to meet my goal. When I know the strategies and keep them all in mind, I will be better able to grow my email list, build my business and increase my profits.
Plan for your steps in business with the end results you want. Figure out how to WIN your game, then plan out the best way to get to that result. Your business is not a game, don't play around with it.
